Here, you get more than a place to stay. You get to experience a living piece of Connecticut history.
A Historic Mill With 150+ Years of Connecticut Heritage
Built in the mid-1800s by B.F. Bulkley, the mill originally operated as a water-powered cider mill and sawmill, serving the farming communities along what was once known as Bulkley’s Pond. Families relied on the mill for daily essentials like freshly pressed cider and milled lumber — the foundation of rural New England life.
The Bulkley family also operated the Sasaco Lake Ice Company, harvesting thick blocks of winter ice from the pond and delivering them to homes and businesses throughout Westport and Fairfield. Long before modern refrigeration, this ice sustained households and shops through warm months, making the mill an integral part of local life.
A Creative Chapter: Home of the Famous Artists School
In the mid-1900s, the mill shifted from industry to artistry. It became the first home of the Famous Artists School, founded by legendary illustrators including Norman Rockwell and Albert Dorne.
Here, aspiring artists from across the country submitted their work for professional critique — all processed through this very building. Its walls carry the creative spirit of one of America’s most iconic art communities.
Lovingly Restored, Respectfully Modernized
Today, the mill has been carefully restored with deep appreciation for its past. The renovation preserved the building’s authentic character, including:
Original mill-era beams
Rich wood textures and natural materials
Historic architectural elements
The rustic charm of a true 19th-century New England mill
Above the coworking space now known as B@Work Coworking, the property offers two beautifully updated guest spaces — each thoughtfully designed to offer modern comfort while honoring the building’s historic soul.
